Bernice Hermosillo proudly displays 2 awards she received as the oldest participant in the El Grito 5K Race. She will be participating in her 12th consecutive El Grito Run this Sunday, September 10th. Bernice remains very active at 81 years young. She walks the perimeter of Sloans Lake 5 days a week. If she is not walking the lake, she can be found in Blackhawk enjoying her recent retirement.
24th ANNUAL EL GRITO 5K AND KID’S “LOS NINOS” RUN SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 at THE BUCKHORN EXCHANGE 10th AND OSAGE, 9 AM DENVER, CO – El Grito 5k is a fun community and family event celebrating culture, and vibrant health through running. The race is an RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) State Championship event. At 8:30 am there will be a race (Los Niños) for children before the 5k start at 9 am. After party will include awards, live music, food, drinks and giveaways. Proceeds fund scholarships for student athletes pursuing higher education. The Colorado Running Club proudly hosts this event. MEANING OF “EL GRITO”
On September 16th, 1810 in the town of Delores, Mexico the shout (el grito) for Independence began when the bell was tolled in the church square by Miguel Hidalgo. El Grito 5k starts with the ringing of the bell to represent freedom and liberty.
THE RACE
The non-profit race is a community focused family event celebrating culture and healthy lifestyles through running. The start and finish are located at The Buckhorn Exchange on 10th and Osage in Denver, Colorado. The course is USATF certified and known for the best post race fiesta! Beer, burritos, music, and prizes. Unique El Grito 5k awards for top 3 in each age group (5 year groups).
BENEFICIARIES
El Grito seeks to inspire young athletes to pursue college education and provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated involvement in their community, track and cross-country running.
