Stand and Deliver is based on the true story of Jaime Escalente, a teacher, going to Garfield High
School in an impoverished East L.A. neighborhood to teach computers. Garfield was the worst
high school in the district and on the verge of losing its accreditation because of a dropout rate of
around 50% and low student performance.

Serious gang issues in the school created an unsafe environment and seriously hindered the learning for students.    When he arrived, he learned the school did not have computers.  He had taught math in Bolivia and now was going to teach his students basic math.

After a short period, Escalante approached the school administration with his interest in teaching his students calculus. With the support of the principal, but opposition from others, he was allowed to proceed.

Some students dropped his class as Escalante was going to engage an extremely rigorous schedule to teach his students calculus and prepare them for the Advanced Placement (AP) calculus exam.  Escalante believed that students would rise or fall to the level of expectations presented to them.

After this class of 18 taking the AP calculus exam and all passing, the AP () investigators believed the students cheated.  Angry, but not defeated, they all agreed to retake the exam and passed with even higher scores.
This story represents determination, perseverance, hard work, belief, support and challenging
low expectations for minority and inner-city students!  We want to re-engage our youth.
