Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The French invasion of Mexico was prompted by the country’s failure to pay foreign debts. The Battle of Puebla was a morale boost for Mexico, and over time, it has become a significant cultural celebration in Mexico and the United States, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican culture, often featuring traditional food, music, and dance. It’s worth noting that while it’s a popular celebration in the United States, in Mexico, the holiday is primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is not as widely celebrated nationwide.
