It all started back in 1991. The Art World was not welcoming to communities of color, including Latinos in Denver. Fed up with being marginalized, a group of passionate Denver artists including Jose Aguayo, Magdalena Aguayo, Ramon Kelley, Ramona Kelley, Emanuel Martinez, Maria Lupita Martinez and Rebecca Arellano teamed up to found Museo de las Americas, a space that would celebrate and honor Latino art and culture with exhibits that showcased our community’s tremendous creative talent.

Dr. Nicki Gonzales To Become First Latino To Be Colorado’s State Historian

Dr. Nicki Gonzales will become the first Latino person to be Colorado’s State Historian, which is a position established in 1924, Gonzales’ historical expertise focuses on Chicano history and Southwest social and political movements. She plans to incorporate youth in the exploration of Colorado’s past during her term as State Historian, and to support more inclusive practices of historical inquiry.

Dr. Marrero has earned numerous awards for education, including being honored as an outstanding administrator by the Latino Caucus of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators and inducted into the New York Academy of Public Education.
